The Greeks
On the Ionian
coast of Italy stands the town of Ciro' where a wine has existed
since the times of Ancient Greece. Myth tells us
that Philoctetes, on returning to his homeland after the Trojan
war, built the towns of Petelia (Strongoli) and Crimisa (Ciro'). At Crimisa Philoctetes
founded a sanctuary in honour of Apollo Aleo who had once cured
him of a snake bite by washing his wounds with wine. In the area
the cult of Dionysus, protector of vines and trees, grew quickly
and in his honour wild festivals were held in which great quantities
of Crimisa wine were consumed. To this very
day Ciro' wine is produced in the same place where the ancient
town of Crimisa stood.
